Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 1:10-13, 17
I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same purpose. For it has been reported to me about you, my brothers and sisters, by Chloe’s people, that there are rivalries among you. I mean that each of you is saying, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In today’s second reading from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians, Paul stresses the importance of the salvation of Christ over the human minister. Paul scold those who are sowing division among the flock based on human loyalty rather than building community based on shared faith in the one LORD and savior of all.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How hard do work to build community among believers?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we come to You this day in awe of all You are and in thanksgiving for all You have given to us. We most especially give thanks for the gift of your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, whom You sent to dwell among us, to be one of us, human in all ways except sin. From Him we learned of the depth and breadth of your love. From Him we learned of the power of acting selflessly for love of You and love of one another. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to strengthen our commitment to living as You call us to live, as sisters and brothers, children of one LORD. Grant that we may labor to embrace fully the redemption offered from You, through your Son, and in the Spirit. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
