Scripture Text:   Mark 4:21-25

Jesus said to his disciples, “Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand? For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light. Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them, “Take care what you hear. The measure with which you measure will be measured out to you and still more will be given to you. To the one who has, more will be given; from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.”

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel text today recounts Jesus’ teaching encouraging those of faith to let that faith shine, specifically, to recognize Christ as the light of the world and allowing His light to illuminate our world. Jesus also warns us concerning our accountability where growth in faith is concerned. Our openness and reception of the truth of Christ will enrich us, but if we are closed to this truth, we will lose even what we had.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How receptive am I to Christ’s light and love? Do I allow it to inform me, to transform me?

Praying:

LORD,  Jesus Christ, Son of God, my Savior, let your light illuminate my mind, my life, my being. Send the Spirit to increase my faith, to deepen my hope and to intensify my love. Grant that I may be a good steward of that which You give to me and use it well this day and all days for love of You, love of the Father Almighty, and love of my sisters and brothers in faith. Amen.
