Brothers and sisters: The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes with inexpressible groanings. And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because he intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will.
Breaking the text open:
The second reading for today, the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time is taken from the Letter to the Romans. The context of this reading is within a larger text that addresses the life of Christians in the Spirit. Through the Spirit, a new life in Christ is possible. The power of the Spirit in the life of a Christian is explained. And today’s text is part of that. Today’s short text assures us that the Spirit aids us in our life and in those moments and areas when we ourselves are unable to meet the demands. The Spirit guides our prayer and intercedes for us.
Meditating on the text:
Do I trust in the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the advocate promised by Christ?
Praying:
Come, O Holy Spirit, fill the hearts and minds of your faithful servants and inflame them with the fire of your divine love. Open our minds and hearts to your word. Help us to comprehend the wisdom You spread before us as well as the love You shower upon us. Assist us in discerning your will for us and strengthen our resolve so that we might live fully the life you are calling us to live in You, with You, and through You. Come, O Holy Spirit, Come.
