Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: July 27, 2024

Date: Saturday of the 16th Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text:  Mt 13:24-30

Jesus proposed a parable to the crowds. "The Kingdom of heaven may be likened to a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was asleep his enemy came and sowed weeds all through the wheat, and then went off. When the crop grew and bore fruit, the weeds appeared as well. The slaves of the householder came to him and said, 'Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where have the weeds come from?' He answered, 'An enemy has done this.' His slaves said to him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?' He replied, 'No, if you pull up the weeds you might uproot the wheat along with them. Let them grow together until harvest; then at harvest time I will say to the harvesters, "First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles for burning; but gather the wheat into my barn."'"

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel text recounts Jesus’ parable concerning the weeds among the wheat. From this parable, we come to understand that among us there will be sinners. It is not up to us to exclude anyone. Judgment belongs to the LORD alone.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I judge others? Do I withhold loving kindness or the Good News from others based on my judgment of them?

Praying:

LORD, You created us. You alone can judge us. Open my mind and heart to all my sisters and brothers in Christ. Guide me in my interactions with others, prompt me to share my love for You with all whom I meet through word and deed. Grant that I may remember during my journey that I, too, am a sinner, and how reliant I am on your loving mercy. Amen.
