LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Romans 5:6-11
While we were still helpless in our sinfulness, Christ died at the appointed time for us. With difficulty one dies for a just person, though for a good person perhaps one would find the courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while were still sinners, Christ died for us. How much more then, being now justified by his blood, shall we be saved through Him. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, shall we be saved by His life. And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ by whom we have now received reconciliation.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Do I hold my redemption precious receiving it without earning it? What am I doing with this priceless gift?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Paul reminds us of the gift we are given in our redemption when we did not earn it because of our own sinfulness. And when we consider the price the LORD paid for love of us, we are humbled and rejoice in His saving and transformative love.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Father Almighty, your love for us has no equal and we struggle to understand how You loved us in our sinfulness enough to send your Son and ask Him to atone through His own life for our sins. Though He took on our human nature in all ways except sin, He gave His life so we might have life. This truth is hard to grasp. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to enlarge our hearts and to strengthen our resolve so we might grasp fully this overwhelming gift and grow in your love into the daughters and sons You created us to be. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
