LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Matthew 7:1-5
(Jesus said to his disciples,) “Judge not so that you are not judged for you shall be judged as you have judged and you shall be measured as you have measured. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye but ignore the beam in your own eye? Or how will you tell your brother, ‘Let me pull out the splinter from your eye,’ when a beam is in your own? You hypocrite, first cast off the beam from your own eye and then you will see clearly to cast out the splinter in your brother’s eye.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Am I a hypocrite? Do I criticize others for sins I myself am guilty of committing?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel reading from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, Jesus emphasizes the need for self-examination, humility, and honesty. Jesus doesn’t forbid us from moral discernment about the actions of others but rather from hypocrisy.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty Father, as I seek to follow in the footsteps of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, I pray for the gift of the Spirit to strengthen my spiritual vision so that I might more humbly and truly see His Way. Grant that I may recognize my own weaknesses and even sins so that I might seek divine grace and even mercy. You are just, O LORD, help me to be an agent of your justice in this world through right relationships with You, with others, and even with myself. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
