Scripture Text: Matthew 5:38-42
Jesus said to his disciples:
"You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. When someone strikes you on your right cheek, turn the other one to him as well. If anyone wants to go to law with you over your tunic, hand him your cloak as well. Should anyone press you into service for one mile, go with him for two miles. Give to the one who asks of you, and do not turn your back on one who wants to borrow."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel continues our reading of Jesus’ “Sermon on the Mount.” Today’s short text deals with retaliation or vengeance. Jesus warns us not to return evil with evil. This passage was actually the inspiration for Gandhi’s nonviolent movement. Jesus tells us not to return evil with evil but rather with good, breaking the spiral of violence.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I get angry at another who mistreats or hurts me? What do I do with that anger?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You created us and establish the law of love for us. And You sent your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to take on our human nature and from within us teach us and lead us to a life in abundance, a life fueled and ruled by loving relationships. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to fan the flames of your life giving and selfless love so that we might grow in our love for goodness. Grant that we may not falter and match evil with evil but rather respond always with loving kindness and mercy. We ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
