LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 1:57-66
When Elizabeth’s time arrived to have her child, she gave birth to a son. And her neighbors and her relatives heard how the Lord had showed great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. And it came to pass that on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they called him Zacharias after the name of his father. And his mother spoke up and said, “He shall be called John.” And they said to her, “There is no one among your family called by this name.” And they made signs to the father about the child’s name. And he asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they all marveled. And his mouth was opened immediately and his tongue freed and he spoke praising God. Fear came on all that dwelt round about them, and all these things were discussed throughout the hill country of Judea. All who heard them took it heart. And they asked, “What manner of child shall this be!” And the Lord was with him.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
How patient am I in my faith? How do I react when I recognize the LORD at work around me in the lives of others?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Today’s gospel reading recounts the birth of John the Baptist to Elizabeth and Zechariah and his being named John (from Hebrew Yahanan meaning “God is gracious”).
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, praise be to You because You brought salvation to us and for us in your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send your Spirit to stir within our minds and hearts and souls so that we might be witnesses to Him in this world. Grant that we may be instruments of your will and your mercy in this world and that we might be the light He calls us to be. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
