LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Matthew 8:5-17
When Jesus came to Capernaum, a centurion approached Him and implored Him saying, “Lord, my servant lies at home sick and paralyzed, suffering greatly.” Jesus responded to him, “I will come and cure him.”
The centurion replied, “Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my rood. Only say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I, also, am a man subject to authority with soldiers subject to me. When I say to one, ‘Go,’ he goes. When I say to another, ‘Come here,’ he comes. And when I say to my slave, ‘Do this,’ he does it.”
As Jesus heard this, He was amazed and said to those following Him, “Amen, I tell you, I have not found such faith in one in Israel. I tell you, many will come from the east and the west and will sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the Kingdom of heaven. But the children of the Kingdom shall be cast out into the outer darkness and there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go on your way, as you have believed, so it has been done.” And his servant was healed at that moment.
When Jesus came into the house of Peter, He was Peter’s mother-in-law sick with a fever. He touched her hand, and the fever left her. She rose and ministered to them.
When evening came, the people brought to him many possessed with devils, and He cast out the spirits with his word and healed all that were sick so as to fulfill the prophesy of Isaiah, “He took our infirmities and bore our sickness.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
When I come to Jesus in need, do I do so with the humility of the centurion? Do I respond to the LORD’s touching my life with actions of gratitude as Peter’s mother-in-law did?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Today’s gospel recounts Jesus’ healing of a centurion’s servant, of Peter’s mother-in-law, and a multitude of others brought to him. We see Jesus’ divine authority and power on display as well as His compassion for our suffering. We also witness the humility of the centurion and Jesus’ inclusion of the Gentiles in the Kingdom.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, I come to You humbly, knowing well my need for You in my life, in me. Send the Spirit to open my mind, my heart, my whole being to You and to your transformative love. May your touch spur me to be your servant this day and all days. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
