LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: 2 Timothy 1:1-3. 6-12
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve as did my ancestors with pure conscience; I remember you constantly in my prayer night and day.
Because of this, I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the imposition of my hands. For God did not give us the spirit of fear but of power and of love and of sound mind. Be, therefore, unashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me, his prisoner. Instead, partake of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the world began. It is made manifest now by the appearance of our Savior Jesus Christ who has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. For this I was appointed preacher and apostle and teacher. For this I suffer these things. Nevertheless, I am not ashamed because I know whom I have believed and am convinced that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him until that day.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s 1st reading from Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy, Paul focuses on the importance of guarding the faith and enduring suffering for the faith. Paul reminds us of his authority as an apostle of Christ called by Jesus to do the LORD’s will. He entreats us as he did Timothy to “stir up the gift of God,” namely the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Finally, Paul reminds us that we are endowed with the power of God, the power of love and sound mind, not cowardice.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty and loving Father, we lift our minds, hearts and voices to You in praise and thanksgiving for all the goodness that is in this world most especially for the gift of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Send your Spirit to stir up within us the resolve to bring our love for Christ to others and to bring others to Christ through our words and actions. Grant that we may have the courage to follow in Christ footsteps, each carrying our own crosses, for love of You, and love of Him. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
