Scripture Text: 2 Timothy 1:8b-10
Beloved:
Bear your share of hardship for the gospel with the strength that comes from God.
He saved us and called us to a holy life, not according to our works but according to his own design and the grace bestowed on us in Christ Jesus before time began but now made manifest through the appearance of our savior Christ Jesus, who destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In the second reading for today from Paul’s 2nd Letter to Timothy, Paul calls upon Christians to “bear” our share of hardship for the gospel, for love of Christ whom we seek to follow in faith, hope and love. Paul reminds us that we can do so through reliance on the grace of our LORD.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I willing to suffer for my faith in Christ and love of Christ?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, salvation comes from You through your Son, Jesus Christ, in the Spirit. Send your Spirit to strengthen my resolve, to deepen my faith, to increase my hope, and to intensify my love so that I might withstand those hardships that arise as your enemies seek to discourage me in my journey to You. Grant that I may rely on your loving grace and promise of life in abundance as I strive to become the one You created me to be, the disciple Christ calls me to be, the instrument of the Spirit. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
