Scripture Text: Luke 6:36-38
Jesus said to his disciples: "Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
"Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive and you will be forgiven. Give and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in return be measured out to you."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In the gospel reading for today, Jesus calls us to be merciful like our Heavenly Father is. He tells us to quit judging and stop condemning others as we ourselves want to not be judged or condemned. And Jesus encourages us to “give” not only materially but also relationally, to be willing to forgive as we ourselves hope to be forgiven.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Can I strive to act as Jesus calls me to act, setting down judgment and condemnation of others and pick up a giving soul with a desire to act with loving kindness and to forgive others as I myself desire to be forgiven?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, send your Spirit to stir within me, to allow your love for me to form me more perfectly as You desire so that I might set down unloving acts like judgment and condemnation of others and pick up instead loving kindness and a desire to love You well and wholly and love my sisters and brothers according to your will. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, my Savior, my light, “the way and the truth and the life.”
