LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: John 8:2-11
Early in the morning, Jesus came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. And he sat down and taught them. And the scribes and Pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, they said to Him, “Master, this woman was caught in adultery, in the very act. Now Moses in the law commanded us that she should be stoned, but what do you say?”
They said this to test him so they could accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground as though he had not heard them. So, they continued to ask him. He rose and said to them, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her.” And then he stooped down again and wrote on the ground.
And they, hearing what he said and admonished by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the eldest, down to the last. Jesus and the woman were left alone.
When Jesus rose and saw none but the woman, He said to her, “Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?”
She said, “No man, Lord.” And Jesus said to her, “Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
“He that is without sin” – do I a sinner judge others?
“Neither do I condemn you” – Jesus’ loving mercy undeserved yet…””Sin no more” – call to a new life.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, I come to You aware of my sins yet seeking your mercy and forgiveness. I look upon the cross and recognize your loving gift to us all, your sisters and brothers, your redemption of us, sinners all, though You yourself are without sin. Send your Spirit to burn upon my memory and heart the image of your loving sacrifice for me so that I might always seek to avoid sin in my future. And stir within me your loving mercy so that I might be more merciful and forgiving toward others along the way. Be with me, Lord, as I seek to remain in You and to open myself fully to the possibilities of life in You. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
