LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: John 8:21-30
Then Jesus said to the Pharisees, “I go my way, and you shall seek me and shall die in your sins because where I go, you cannot come.”
Then the Jews said, “Will he kill himself because he says ‘Where I go, you cannot come?’”
Jesus said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. I therefore said to you that you shall die in your sins because if you do not believe that I AM, you shall die in your sins.”
Then they said to Him, “Who are you?”
And Jesus said to them, “I have told you from the beginning. I have many things to say about you in judgment, but He who sent me is true. And I speak to the world those things that I have heard of Him.”
They did not understand that He was speaking to them of the Father.
Then Jesus said to them, “When you have lifted up the Son of man, then you will know that I AM, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father has taught me, I speak these things. And He who sent me is with me. The Father has not left me alone because I do always those things that please him.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
“If you do not believe that I AM, you shall die in your sins.” Do I believe? How deep is my faith?
“I do nothing of myself” – unity of Father and Son
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty Father, I come to You in awe of all You are and all that is because of You. Most especially, I come with thanksgiving for your gift of your only-begotten Son, sharing Him with us, sending Him as our brother in all ways except sin, to reveal You more fully and to open up to us the depth of your love and the breadth of your mercy. Send your Spirit to strengthen my faith, to intensify my hope, and to increase my love so that I might firmly proclaim my belief in Jesus Christ, “the way and the truth and the life.” I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
