NOTE: For the remaining days of May, I will feature a Scripture text involving Mary as tribute to her in this her month as the Mother of our Savior.
LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 1:26-38
And in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from Got to a city in Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin espoused to a man named Joseph of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.
The angel came to her and said, “Hail, favored one, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women.” And when she saw him, she was troubled by his words and wondered what sort of greeting this was. The angel went on and said, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you shall conceive and bring forth a son, and he shall be called Jesus. He shall be great, called the Son of the Most High. The LORD God will give to him the throne of his father, David. And he shall reign over the House of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will not end.”
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be since I have no relations with a man?”
And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit shall come on you and the power of the Most High shall overshadow you and the child born of you shall be called the Son of God. And behold, your cousin Elizabeth has conceived a son in her old age. This is the sixth month with her who was called barren for with God nothing shall be impossible.”
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Our reading for today from the scriptural text concerning Mary recounts the Annunciation where the angel Gabriel encounter Mary and announced the Lord’s desire that she be the mother of His only-begotten Son through the overshadowing/power of the Holy Spirit. This passage is best remembered as Mary’s “Fiat” (Latin for “let it be done”) – her powerful “yes” to the LORD will and plan for salvation.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty Father, I come to You this day in awe of You and what is because of You and your love. I especially give You thanks for the gift of Mary, the holy woman of faith you called to be the mother of your only begotten Son. Grant that I may grow into a person of faith like Mary, a person who hopes in your promise, a person whose love for You allows surrender to your all-knowing and all-loving will. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
