NOTE: For the remaining days of May, I will feature a Scripture text involving Mary as tribute to her in this her month as the Mother of our Savior.

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Luke 1:39-45

And Mary rose and went into the hill country with haste, into the city of Juda, and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby in her womb leaped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. And she spoke out in a loud voice and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. How is it that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For, as soon as your voice reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy. And blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.”

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

This text from the Gospel of Luke recounts Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth who was thought barren and whom the angel Gabriel had hold Mary was expecting a child in spite of her age.  We see Mary acting as the first missionary, bearing Christ to another. And we hear Elizabeth recognize and name Mary as “Mother of God”, spurred on by her infant’s joyful recognition of the presence of Christ.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Almighty Father, I come to You today in awe of all You are in wonder of how it is in You that I live and move and have my being. I give thanks to You for your all-loving and all-powerful presence and for Mary’s discernment of and surrender to your will that she be the mother of your only-begotten Son, my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Send your Spirit to empower me to bring Christ with me into the world this day, to bring Christ to others. I ask this in the name of Jesus, your beloved Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
