LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   1 Peter 1:18-25

Understand that you were not ransomed from your futile behavior by perishable things such as silver and gold but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, who was foreordained before the foundation of the world and manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God who raised Him up from the dead and gave Him glory that your faith and hope might be in God.

Seeing you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit the sincere love of your brethren, see that you love one another with a pure heart fervently. Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God who lives and abides forever, for

“all flesh is as grass.

and all its glory as the flower of the field.”

The grass withers, and the flower falls away but the word of the Lord endures forever. And this the word which is preached to you by the gospel.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In our first reading for the day, the Apostle Peter stresses the high cost paid for the salvation of humanity. We are reminded that we were not ransomed with perishable earthly metals but with the freely and lovingly sacrificed life of Christ upon the cross of Calvary. As the recipients of such a loving and selfless gift, it is our duty to live the life He calls us to and gave His life for.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Almighty Father, we come to You in wonder and awe that You would give your only-begotten Son to win salvation and life for sinful humanity. In loving awe and wonder and gratitude, we acknowledge the selfless choice of your beloved Son who for love of You and love of us, willingly offered Himself as our ransom, as the means of redemption. Send your Spirit to stir within us, to rouse not only our memory but our sincere love for You and for our Savior, Jesus Christ. Grant that our lives may reflect our love, our faithfulness, our desire to grow into the ones You created us to be and the ones Jesus died so that we might be. We ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
