Wednesday of the 3rd Week of Easter

Scripture Text:  John 6:35-40

Jesus said to the crowds, "I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst. But I told you that although you have seen me, you do not believe. Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and I will not reject anyone who comes to me, because I came down from heaven not to do my own will but the will of the one who sent me. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel text for today is a continuation of Jesus’ “Bread of Life Discourse” in the Gospel of John. Jesus, the “bread of life” was sent into the world by the Father, to “not lose” – to save – us, but we must believe.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I “see” and “believe” in Jesus?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to take on our human nature, to live among us, to teach us of You and your love and desire that we have life in abundance. It was your will that Jesus came to us and gave Himself for our redemption, giving His life for our sins though He Himself was without sin. Send your Spirit to open my eyes, my mind, my heart to the truth and to His power and presence still at work in our world. Grant that I may more wholly and more lovingly open myself to Him, your Word made flesh. I ask this in the name of Jesus, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
