LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: John 15:18-21
“If the world hates you, know that it hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own, but because you are not of the world because I have chosen you out of the world, the world will hate you. Remember the word that I spoke to you, ‘The servant is not greater than his master.’ If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they have kept my word, they will also keep yours. All these things they do to you because of my name’s sake because they do not know Him who sent me.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel reading from Jesus’ final discourse to His disciples as recorded in John’s gospel, Jesus warns us that being His follower will cost us because of the world’s hatred of the LORD and those chosen by Him. As disciples, we are called to live a countercultural life and to adhere to our identification with our Lord and Savior.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Lord, Almighty Father, I come to You this day in awe of You and in thanksgiving for the gift of your only-begotten Son. You sent Him into the world to reveal You and your loving desire that we have life. For love of You and love of us, He selflessly gave himself upon the cross of Calvary as our savior. Send your Spirit to strengthen my resolve to follow Him as His disciple regardless of the cost. Steel my courage so I might withstand the pressures to put down my faith, my hope and my love. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
