Date: Solemnity of our Lord, Christ the King

Scripture Text:  Colossians 1:12-20

Brothers and sisters:

Let us give thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s second reading from Paul’s Letter to the Colossians most eloquently reminds us of who Jesus is: Son of God, our redeemer, the image of the Father. “In Him, all the fullness was pleased to dwell and through him to reconcile all things for him.”

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

When I think of Jesus, who do I see? How would I describe Him to one who doesn’t know Jesus? How would I describe the impact of His life and love on us?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten Son to assume our human nature in all ways except sin. Through His life, teachings, miracles and actions, we came to better understand You, our Father, Abba. Through His love for You and obedience to your will, we came to better understand the gift of true love. Send your Spirit to ignite in us, His followers, the fire of divine love. Grant that we may live as You created us to live, as your daughters and sons, and as He calls us to live, His disciples. Let His love hold us all together, united yet diverse. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
