Scripture Text: PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11
Brothers and sisters:
Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and, found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.
Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
In the first reading for today, Paul reminds us of Jesus’ loving and humble sacrifice for us upon the cross. And Paul exhorts us to revere and love Jesus Christ, Son of God, our savior.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Have I openly and whole heartedly considered and embraced Jesus Christ as Son of God, my savior, LORD?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You created us from love, through love, and in love You set before us the loving path of our lives. When we failed to live as You created us to live and to love as You created us to love, You sent your beloved Son to reveal your transformative love to us, to call us back into right relationship with You and with one another, and to atone for our sins which we ourselves had not done. Send your Spirit to illuminate our minds and hearts and to help us grasp your great love for us most fully expressed in your beloved Son’s selfless sacrifice upon the cross at Calvary for us and for our salvation and life. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
