Scripture Text: PHILIPPIANS 2:12-18

My beloved, obedient as you have always been, not only when I am present but all the more now when I am absent, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work. Do everything without grumbling or questioning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine like lights in the world, as you hold on to the word of life, so that my boast for the day of Christ may be that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. But, even if I am poured out as a libation upon the sacrificial service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with all of you. In the same way you also should rejoice and share your joy with me.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

In the first reading for today from Paul’s Letter to the Philippians reminds us that we are to live our faith always, not just when others are watching, live it and not just profess it. We are to bring Christ’s light with us into the world.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How committed am I to living my faith? Do I relegate it to particular times and places or am I truly Christ’s instrument wherever I am and whatever I do?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You call us into being. Even as we were formed in our mother’s wombs, You showered your love upon us. Your love for us and desire for our life in abundance with You led You to send your only-begotten Son to dwell among us, to take on our humanity as His own, and as our brother to reveal your great love for us. His revelation came in his teachings and most powerfully in His selfless obedience to your will upon the cross of Calvary. Dying He destroyed our death and rising He restored our life. Send your Spirit so that we may embrace our salvation won for us by your Son, and live boldly as Christ’s disciples, bringing Christ to others and others to Christ who is “the Way and the Truth and the Life.” We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
