Scripture Text: Luke 17:11-19
As Jesus continued his journey to Jerusalem, he traveled through Samaria and Galilee. As he was entering a village, ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance from him and raised their voices, saying, "Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!" And when he saw them, he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." As they were going, they were cleansed. And one of them, realizing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. He was a Samaritan. Jesus said in reply, "Ten were cleansed, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God?" Then he said to him, "Stand up and go; your faith has saved you."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading from Luke recounts Jesus’ healing of 10 lepers. The focus of the reading is the one grateful Samaritan leper who upon realizing he was cured returned to give thanks. Of the 10, it seems that only this one recognized the divinity of the one who had brought Him healing. While all 10 were cured, only this one heard Christ’s promise: “your faith has saved you.”
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
What graces and blessings in my life have I failed to acknowledge with gratitude to my LORD?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, I lift my voice in praise of You for all You are and in thanksgiving for the goodness that exists because of You and your loving presence. Grant that my eyes, mind, heart and soul will remain open to your transcendent love and gifts that grace my life and that I will daily return to You in humble gratitude for truly I believe that without You I would not be nor would I be who I am. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
