Scripture Text:  GALATIANS 5:18-25

Brothers and sisters:

If you are guided by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, acts of selfishness, dissensions, factions, occasions of envy, drinking bouts, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. In contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s first reading is drawn from Paul’s Letter to the Galatians. In it, Paul urges the readers, the faithful in the community of believers, to follow the Spirit, Christ’s gift to them to help them on their journeys in life.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I open to the Spirit? Do I seek to cooperate with the graces and fruits of the Spirit in my life (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control)?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten Son to dwell among us as our brother and to reveal your great love for us and your plan for our salvation. In obedience to You and your will, He selflessly died upon the cross of Calvary for our sins. Dying He destroyed our death and rising He restored our life. He promised us the gift of the Advocate, the Spirit for this age. Grant that we may be open to the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit, that we may cooperate with your will and with your gifts. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
