Date: Memorial of the Holy Guardian Angels

 Scripture Text:  Matthew 18:1-5, 10

The disciples approached Jesus and said, "Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?" He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, "Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the Kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.

"See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Jesus’ words to the disciples concerning greatness must have surprised them. It surprises us. But Jesus is adamant; if we would be great, we must be humble, acknowledge our dependence on God and allow our vulnerability to show. Greatness in the Kingdom isn’t about status but about emptying ourselves to make room for Christ.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I too worried about what others think of me or see in me? Am I content to be a “child of God” and a disciple?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, on this day when we consider the angels You send to surround us on our journey home, we lift our voices and our hearts and minds to You in praise and thanksgiving. We consider your love best manifested in the gift of your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, for our illumination and our redemption. Send your Spirit to scrub our hearts and minds clear of desires for those things which do not matter in your divine design to make room for what does, our dependence upon You and the gift of your Son. Grant that we may welcome Him into our lives, our hearts, our soul. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
