Scripture Text: Luke 9:51-56

When the days for Jesus to be taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusalem, and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, "Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?" Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village.

The gospel text for today from the Gospel of Luke reminds us that in our zeal for Christ, we could mistakenly act in unholy ways. Jesus taught us that the LORD desires mercy, not judgment of others or retaliation for differences. This is especially important for us today who live in a truly volatile and reactive world marked by polarization and division.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Can my religious zeal or piety lead me be hurtful to others? Do I act superior to those who believe differently or practice their faith differently? Am I tolerant of others or judgmental?

Praying:

LORD, as we journey through our lives here on earth in faith, buoyed by hope, we beg that You send your Spirit to guide us in love. Our zeal for You and our desires for life with You are deep; but we recognize that we are not perfect; we make mistakes along the way. Grant that we may look always for the loving solutions in life as we seek to come to know You more clearly, to serve You more perfectly, and to love You more deeply.
