Scripture Text:  Luke 14:1-6

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, "Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?" But they kept silent; so, he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them "Who among you, if your son or ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?" But they were unable to answer his question.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel reading for today shows us Jesus healing again on the Sabbath. Again, Jesus shows us through His example that the best way to honor the LORD is through loving and compassionate action.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Am I legalistic in my faith or holistic? Do I focus on individual laws or on law in the context of my relationship with the LORD and others and how it helps to grow both?

Praying:

LORD, Always and everywhere You call to me and remind me that You created me and called me into being. Grant that I may grow into the one You created and into the disciple You called. Help me to live my life with love as my primary purpose, love of You and love for all whom You created, for all whom You died to redeem from sin, and for all whom you stir to righteousness. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
