Date: Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

Scripture Text:  Philippians 2:6-11

Brothers and sisters:

Christ Jesus, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The second reading for today’s feast of the exaltation of the holy cross reminds us of Jesus’ humility and selfless love and the Father Almighty’s exalting Him above all others for His loving sacrifice.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I consider the name of Jesus holy and to be uttered with loving awe and wonder?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, on this day we lift high the cross and call upon the name of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Son of God. With humble and loving hearts we life our voices in praise and thanksgiving. Grant that we may always and everywhere revere the name of your only begotten son, Jesus Christ. Send your Spirit to stir within us this day and all days so the fire of your love grows. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
