Date: Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows

Scripture Text:  John 19:25-27

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple took her into his home.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Today’s gospel reading recounts Jesus’ words on the cross to His mother and to the disciple, John.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

How did Mary hold up as she watched her beloved and only Son die upon a cross? Do I consider Jesus’ words as making Mary our mother as well?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, Son of God, Son of Mary, our Savior, we lift our eyes to the crucifix and remember your selfless sacrifice for us and for our redemption. And we consider the pain of your beloved mother, Mary, as she kept watch with You. Even in your pain and anguish, You thought of your mother and your thought of us. Send your Spirit to stir compassion for others within our hearts and beings. Grant that we may always remember the price You paid for us and seek to live as your disciples, grateful for your sacrifice. Grant that we may show courage in the face of evil and love in the face of hate as your mother Mary. Amen.
