Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 2:1-5
When I came to you, brothers and sisters, proclaiming the mystery of God, I did not come with sublimity of words or of wisdom. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading today is drawn from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians and lays out for us, as disciples, how we, too, are to bring the Good News of Jesus Christ crucified to others. As disciples, we are bound to be spreaders of the Gospel; however, it is not us but the Spirit who works through us that is persuasive.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I open myself completely to the Spirit as an instrument of the LORD’s work and Christ’s ongoing salvific mission? Or do I make it all about me? Do I trust the Spirit enough to let the Spirit work?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten and most beloved Son to us as the means of your salvation. He came among us as one of us, as our brother. And He revealed your great love for us not only through his teachings but also through his actions, most especially through his selfless sacrifice upon the cross at Calvary. Salvation came to us from You, through Him, and in the Spirit. Send the Spirit to me to open me to your son’s call to carry the Good News wherever I go through my words but also my actions. Grant that I may become the child You created me to be, the disciple Christ calls me to be, and the instrument of divine grace the Spirit gifts me to be. I ask all this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
