Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 24, 2024

Date: Tuesday of the 25th Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text:  Luke 8:19-21

The mother of Jesus and his brothers came to him but were unable to join him because of the crowd. He was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, and they wish to see you.” He said to them in reply, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

Jesus’ response to being told that his family was outside and wanted to see him was not disrespectful to them. In fact, who among us has more gracefully and lovingly responded to the word of God and acted on it than the Blessed Mother. Jesus’ point for those present was that it is how we live our relationship with the Father Almighty and how we conduct ourselves according the LORD’s Word and will rather than our human heritage or prestige that will ultimately matter.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I attentively seek the Word and will of the LORD and then act upon it with loving humility and perseverance?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, always and everywhere your love for us abounds. You are the source of our being, and your love continues to transform us and our lives as we open ourselves to You and your loving will for us. Grant that we may grow into the daughters and sons You created us to be, the disciples You call us to be, and your living temples here on earth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
