Scripture Text: Luke 9:1-6
Jesus summoned the Twelve and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to heal the sick. He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic. Whatever house you enter, stay there and leave from there. And as for those who do not welcome you, when you leave that town, shake the dust from your feet in testimony against them.” Then they set out and went from village to village proclaiming the good news and curing diseases everywhere.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel reading shows us Jesus gathering the Twelve, giving them the power and authority they needed to heal and to preach, and sending them out to go where He sends them and to do what He is sending them to do. His instructions are simple and that’s His point: Keep it simple. This isn’t a vacation; this is a mission.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I allow Christ to send me, to gift me for the mission, and then to do as I am asked? Can I keep it simple and make it all about bringing Christ to others and others to Christ?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, I come to You and ask You to send me. Send your Spirit to gift me with the resolve necessary to participate in your Mission and the spiritual gifts necessary to be your disciple. Send me, LORD, to bring your love, your salvation, and your Good News to others. Grant that I may have the faith, hope and love needed to deny myself, to pick up my cross, and follow where You lead me for love of You and for the glory of our Almighty Father in the Spirit. Amen.
