Date in the Ordine: Monday of the 25th Week in Ordinary Time

Scripture Text: Luke 8:16-18

Jesus said to the crowd: "No one who lights a lamp conceals it with a vessel or sets it under a bed; rather, he places it on a lampstand so that those who enter may see the light. For there is nothing hidden that will not become visible, and nothing secret that will not be known and come to light. Take care, then, how you hear. To anyone who has, more will be given, and from the one who has not, even what he seems to have will be taken away."

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The gospel reading for today begins by reminding us that as followers of Christ, the Light of the World, we have been given a share of that light. It was given us not to hide but rather to illuminate in Christ’s name. Christ also admonishes us to “listen” and hear in His words the promise of life but also the responsibility to hear and share what we hear. Finally, Jesus reminds us that if our faith, hope and love are shallow, even that will be taken away. We must open ourselves and allow the LORD’s light and love to fill us.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Does my presence light the way for others and illuminate the world in Christ’s name?

Praying:

LORD, Jesus Christ, You are the “light of the world” and You share that light with us with the command to share that light with others in your name to the glory of the Father. Send your Spirit to increase our desire to bear your light to others. Amen.
