Scripture Text: Luke 9:7-9
Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed because some were saying, "John has been raised from the dead"; others were saying, "Elijah has appeared"; still others, "One of the ancient prophets has arisen." But Herod said, "John I beheaded. Who then is this about whom I hear such things?" And he kept trying to see him.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s brief gospel reading reminds us of our human difficulty in discerning who Jesus is. While we who have accepted Him as Son of God and our Savior, not everyone who encountered Jesus could accept His mission, His nature, His being.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Who do I say Jesus is? Do I fluctuate in my answers depending upon my needs?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to dwell among us, taking upon himself our human nature in all ways except sin. You sent the Spirit to guide Him. And millenniums later, many are still trying to decide who He is. He told us He is your beloved Son and You are His beloved Father. He told us He is “the way and the truth and the life.” He told us that He is “the light of the world.” Send your Spirit to open our eyes and hearts and to illuminate our minds so that we might more fully grasp who Jesus is and what that truth means in our life. Grant that as His disciples, we may deny ourselves, pick up our cross, and follow Him. We ask this in the name of your Son who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
