Scripture Text: Colossians 1:9-14
Brothers and sisters:
From the day we heard about you, we do not cease praying for you and asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of God's will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, so as to be fully pleasing, in every good work bearing fruit and growing in the knowledge of God, strengthened with every power, in accord with his glorious might, for all endurance and patience, with joy giving thanks to the Father, who has made you fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light. He delivered us from the power of darkness and transferred us to the Kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading for today is drawn from the beginning of Paul’s Letter to the Colossians and highlights the apostle’s prayers for the faithful that they are illuminated spiritually so that they may bear fruit through their faith lived out loud. He also assures the faithful of the redemption we have in Christ.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Am I seeking to understand Christ’s teachings, example and commands so as to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord”? Am I opening myself to the LORD and His will so that I might bear good fruit through my life in Him?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son to us as our brother, human in all ways except sin, and You asked Him to selflessly, for love of You and us, to give His life so we might have life. Send your Spirit to stir within us the recognition of this great love for us from You and from your Son, Jesus Christ, so that we might better understand the importance of loving and right relationships in our journeys home to life with You, through your Son, and in your Spirit. Grant that our lives may be a reflection of the love we know and have experienced and that our lives may bear fruit for your glory. We ask this in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
