Scripture Text: Colossians 1:15-20
Brothers and sisters:
Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him were created all things in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers; all things were created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the Body, the Church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things he himself might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile all things for him, making peace by the Blood of his cross through him, whether those on earth or those in heaven.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The first reading for today continues our reading of Paul’s Letter to the Colossians. Today’s text presents a creed of listing Christ’s titles and attributes beginning with “the image of the invisible God”. Paul stresses to us that Christ is both the agent and the recipient of all creation for it was through Him all things were created. Christ is identified as the head of the Church who believe in the redemption He won for us on the cross.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Have I really looked at Christ in these ways? Has my relationship with Christ opened up for me an understanding of His authority and supremacy?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we lift our prayers this day of praise and thanksgiving to You, our Father and we give You thanks for the gift of your beloved and only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ who opened for us a path to better knowing and loving You by revealing You to us and teaching us of your great love for us. And nowhere was your love for us more visible and more perfect than in your gift of your Son who selflessly sacrificed himself for love of You and love of us and for the redemption of our sins. Send your Spirit to open our minds, hearts, and souls to You and your love and to your Son, Jesus Christ. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
