Scripture Text: John 3:16-21
God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God. And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel text for today is drawn from the end of Jesus’ response to Nicodemus. Jesus tells us that the Father sent the Son into the world so that we might have eternal life, so that we might be saved through Him. Jesus calls us to be children of the light and of life.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
How deeply and wholly do I believe in Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your only-begotten Son, Jesus, to us to reveal your great love for us and desire that we have eternal life. Send your Spirit to fully and wholly open our minds and our hearts to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and to the salvation He gave his life to win for us. Grant that we may believe in Him this day and all days and bring news of Him to others through word and deed. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You can the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
