LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Matthew 22:1-14

Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parable saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son. And he sent his servant to invite guests to the wedding, but they would not come. Again, he sent out other servants saying, ‘Tell the gusts, “Behold, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fatlings are slaughtered, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”’ But the guests made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his shop. And some took his servants and treated them badly, even killed them.

When the king heard of this, he was angry. And he sent out his armies and destroyed those who had murdered his servants and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but the guests were not worthy. Go, therefore, onto the highways and find as many as you can find, inviting them to the wedding.’

So, those servants went out into the highways and byways and gathered together all whom they found, both good and bad, and wedding was filled with guests. When the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who was not dressed in a wedding garment. He said to him, ‘Friend, how is that you are here without a wedding garment?’ The guest was speechless. Then the king said to his servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot and take him away and cast him out into the darkness where there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. For many are called but few are chosen.’”

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Do I find myself in the LORD’s presence? Am I dressed for the occasion? Or have I just presumed the invitation required no change on my part?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel repeats Jesus’ parable of the king’s wedding banquet. The king is God the Father, the son is Jesus Christ, the divine bridegroom. The wedding symbolizes the kingdom of heaven. We are all invited, but not everyone accepts. But we can’t just show up. We must “change” to enter into kingdom, a change possible only through grace and our openness to that grace and willingness to cooperate – a true conversion.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, I am not worthy to be your guest. And yet You invite me to your feast for your beloved Son. Send your Spirit to clothe me in humility and to turn me wholly to You. Open my mind and heart to the wonder of your invitation and to your presence without which no change will matter. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
