Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: August 28,2026
LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: 1 Corinthians 1:17-25
Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, not with the wisdom of words that would empty the cross of Christ of its meaning.
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved, it is the power of God. For it is written:
I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
And I will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this world? Hasn’t God made foolishness the wisdom of this world? For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it is the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who believe. For Jews require a sign and Greeks wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
Do I deeply and humbly acknowledge the LORD’s wisdom? Do I overestimate my own wisdom? Am I willing and able to surrender to the LORD?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Today’s first reading for today, the feast of St. Augustine, we read an excerpt from Paul’s 1st Letter to the Corinthians in which he reveals the irony in the Lord’s saving power being revealed to us through Jesus’ death on the cross, a true paradox. Humans weren’t prepared for a crucified and suffering Messiah, but that is the path the Lord chose for our salvation.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, Almighty Father, we come to You this day with all humility, admitting that Your ways surpass our ways, that Your wisdom outshines our wit. The power of cross is profoundly undeniable. May we never boast of our own intellect or accomplishments but rather in Jesus Christ. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
