Scripture Text:  Hebrews 2:14-18

Since the children share in blood and flesh, Jesus likewise shared in them, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil, and free those who through fear of death had been subject to slavery all their life. Surely, he did not help angels but rather the descendants of Abraham; therefore, he had to become like his brothers and sisters in every way, that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest before God to expiate the sins of the people. Because he himself was tested through what he suffered, he is able to help those who are being tested.

Breaking the text open – background and summary:

The second reading for today’s feast of the Presentation of the Lord is from Paul’s Letter to the Hebrews and reminds us that Jesus took on our human nature and became our brother in order to redeem us - as a “merciful and faithful high priest”. Paul reminds us that Jesus suffered greatly in his salvific mission and understands our trials.

Meditating on the text with personal questions:

Do I turn to Jesus in my need? Do I recognize in Jesus one who understand not only the way of the LORD but also the difficulties of the journey?

Praying:

LORD, Almighty Father, You sent your beloved and only-begotten Son to serve as our redeemer, to reconcile us to You through his selfless sacrifice upon the cross on Calvary. Through his death and resurrection, He freed us from the slavery of sin and death. Send your Spirit to open our minds and hearts fully to the depth and breadth of your love for us that necessitated this sacrifice and to Jesus love for You and us that sustained Him throughout His salvific mission here on earth. Make of us the daughters and sons You created us to be and the disciples He calls us to be. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
