Scripture Text: Matthew 5:1-12a
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:
"Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger
and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who
are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you
and persecute and utter every kind of evil
against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven."
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
Today’s gospel text brings us the Beatitudes and the beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount focusing on the loving posture of discipleship rather than on external actions beginning with dependence on the LORD
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I acknowledge my dependence upon the LORD? Do I yield to the LORD and His will rather than my own will and pride? Am I seeking a place within the kingdom of God?
Praying:
LORD, Almighty Father, we turn to You, our hearts full of awe and praise as well as thanksgiving. With humility, acknowledging our dependence upon You for life itself, we seek your power and presence to guide use, to guard us, and to grace us so that we may grow into the children You created us to be. We give thanks for the gift of your only-begotten Son and pray that You will send the Spirit to strengthen us so that we might more perfectly follow in His footsteps, He who is “the way and the truth and the life.” We ask this in the name of Jesus, your beloved Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
