LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Matthew 5:38-42
(Jesus said,) “You have heard it said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, offer no resistance to one who is evil. If someone should strike you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also. And if anyone should sue you to take away your coat, let him also have your cloak. And whenever anyone should compel you to go a mile, go with him two. Give to what he asks of you, and do not turn your back on the one who wants to borrow.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
How hard am I trying to love others as the LORD loves them?
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel, we read another portion of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, in which He commands us to reject revenge when offended and respond instead with a radical generosity and grace. Jesus’ teaching does not mandate passivity to grave danger or abuse but rather that only authentic love can overcome hate.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, Almighty Father, Beloved Son, Most Holy Spirit, I am made in your image and You are love. Stir within me your love so that it might more perfectly fuel my life and guide my choices. Grant that I may act lovingly and righteously rather than reactively and revengefully. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
