Scripture Text: John 21:20-25
Peter turned and saw the disciple following whom Jesus loved, the one who had also reclined upon his chest during the supper and had said, "Master, who is the one who will betray you?" When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about him?" Jesus said to him, "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me." So, the word spread among the brothers that that disciple would not die. But Jesus had not told him that he would not die, just "What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours?"
It is this disciple who testifies to these things and has written them, and we know that his testimony is true. There are also many other things that Jesus did, but if these were to be described individually, I do not think the whole world would contain the books that would be written.
Breaking the text open – background and summary:
The gospel reading for today from John concerns Peter’s question to Jesus about the disciple John and what would become of him. Jesus doesn’t answer Peter’s question. Instead, Jesus asks Peter what concern it is to him. The Jesus said simply, “You follow me.”
We know that John went on to write the Gospel of John, Letters, and the Revelation of John.
Meditating on the text with personal questions:
Do I focus on what the LORD is calling me to do? Can I let envy of others distract me?
Praying:
LORD, Jesus Christ, You call us to believe in You as Son of God, our Savior, and to follow You. Send the Spirit to strengthen my resolve to listen for your voice, to answer your call with all my heart and all my strength. Grant that I may support others on their journey and help them to respond to You and your love. Amen.
