LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Matthew 5:1-12
Seeing the multitude, He went up on the mountain. When he was settled, His disciples joined Him. And He taught them saying,
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and say all manner of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven. They persecuted the prophets before you.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
In today’s gospel, Jesus presents the Sermon on the Mount, a guide to holiness. We see Jesus go up the mountain to deliver this teaching and we are reminded of Moses who went up Sinai to receive the 10 commandments, the laws of the covenant. He begins with our dependence on the LORD and the suffering that we will experience when we truly love. He calls us to gentleness and a deep and powerful yearning for right relationship with the LORD and one another and reminds us that mercy and forgiveness will play an important role in those relationships. He calls us to be “pure” in our intentions and relationships and to seek peace and wholeness not only for ourselves but for those whom we love. And He warns us that following Him and living as we are created to live will pit the world against us.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
LORD, Creator, Savior, Sanctifier, be with me this day. Help me to live the life You created me to live, grant that I may live the life You gave your own life to give to me, life in abundance. May I savor your grace and follow your guidance. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
