NOTE: For the remaining days of May, I will feature a Scripture text involving Mary as tribute to her in this her month as the Mother of our Savior.
LECTIO - Read Scripture Text: Luke 1: 46-55
And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
For He has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day on, all generations will call me blessed.
The Mighty One has done great things for me,
And holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him in from generation to generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their seats
And exalted the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
He has come to the aid of his servant Israel
For He has remembered His promise of mercy,
The promise He made to our fathers,
To Abraham and his children forever.”
MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:
BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:
Mary’s praise that we call the Magnificat appears in the Gospel of Luke at the conclusion of her initial encounter with her cousin Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist. Mary proclaims the LORD’s mercy, strength, and justice as seen most especially in the lifting up of the lowly.
ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:
Almighty and Loving Father, I come to You this day with a heart full of praise for You and thanksgiving for your loving mercy shown forth daily in your presence to me and to all your daughters and sons. Send your Spirit to awaken within me the awareness of your power and presence at work in the world, manifestations of your abiding love. Grant that I may daily and rightly lift my mind and heart to You in praise and thanksgiving and my needs to You in trust and hope. May my praise rise to You as Mary’s. I ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Spirit, one LORD, forever and ever. Amen.
CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
