LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   1 Corinthians 1:10b-16

The Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. Among men, who knows what pertains to a man except his spirit within? Similarly, no one knows what pertains to God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God so that we may understand the things freely given to us by God. And we speak about them not with words man’s wisdom teaches but with words taught by the Spirit, comparing spiritual realities with spiritual terms.

Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God because to him it is foolishness and incomprehensible because it is judged spiritually. The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything but is not judged by anyone.

For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct him?” Be we have the mind of Christ.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Before reading scripture, do I call upon the Spirit of God to guide me and help me see into the spiritual truths within?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s first reading, Paul instructs the Corinthians and us about the central and essential role of the Holy Spirit as the lone revealer of God’s deepest mysteries which human intellect cannot fathom on its own. Put another way, we cannot without the help of the Holy Spirit break open the gospel and its truths. We, as humans without the Spirit have only psychikos (human reason), but to see the cross of Christ as children of God and Christians, we much rely on the Spirit who guides our pneumatikos (spiritual reason). We are especially blessed, Paul assures us, because if we open ourselves to the Spirit and the Spirit’s guidance and grace, we are blessed with Christ’s mind, Christ’s perspective.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Almighty and Loving Father, we come to You in awe of your power and presence and your wisdom. And we recognize that your ways are mysteries to us that we cannot open nor fathom on our own. Please send the Holy Spirit to help us comprehend your ways and your will. Grant that we may grow in our humility and open ourselves to the Spirit’s grace so that we might better embrace the mysteries of faith, most especially the salvific mission of Christ that take us to the cross. Guard our minds and hearts from human pride. May we learn to walk lovingly in  the footsteps of your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, with all humility. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
