LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   1 Corinthians 12:12-14, 27-31a

For as the body is one and has many parts and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free persons, and we were all made to drink of the one Spirit.

Now the body is not a single part, but many.

Now you are Christ’s Body and individually parts of it. Some people God has designated in the Church to be: first, apostles; second, prophets; third, teachers; then mighty deeds; then gifts of healing, assistance, administration, and diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work mighty deeds? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?

Strive eagerly for the best gifts, and I will show you a more excellent way.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Do I acknowledge my interdependence with other members of Christ’s body? Have I discerned my gift? Am I using it?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

In today’s first reading, St. Paul uses the metaphor of the human body to teach us about the Church, the living Body of Christ, unified and interdependent yet each with its own function used for the common good. We share one baptism in the Spirit and one Lord.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

LORD, your divine design amazes us. You have molded us into your Church, your living body here on earth, each with a purpose, a divinely given gift for the growth and well-being of the whole and for the fulfillment of your will. Send your Spirit to guide us, to help us to discern our specific gifts, and to rouse us to use it fully for the growth and well-being of your living body, the Body of Christ. Teach us to honor the gifts of each member and to labor together, interdependently, for love of You and love of one another. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
