Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 2,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Luke 4:38-44

And Jesus left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. And Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering with a great fever, and they sought Jesus’ help for her. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever and it left her. Immediately, she rose and ministered to them.

Now when the sun was setting, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to Him. He laid hands on each of them and healed them. And demons also came out of many crying out and saying, “You are Christ, the Son of God.” And He rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew He was the Christ.

And the next day, He departed and went into a desert place. And the people sought Him and came to Him and stayed with Him so that He would not leave.  But He said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also as I was sent to do.” And He preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Do I bring my needs to Christ? Does Christ touch upon my mind, heart, soul and life cause me to want to serve others? Do I know my life’s mission clearly?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel recounts Jesus’ healings beginning with that of Simon’s mother-in-law. And we see her response; upon being healed she immediately begins serving others. In the midst of this passage, we see Jesus retreat for personal prayer. Finally, when the crowds try to persuade Him to stay with them, Jesus reminds us of His mission and calls us as His followers to stay mission focused, as well.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Loving and Almighty Father, as we reflect on the powerful ministry of your Son, Jesus Christ, we ask for that healing in our lives. Restore us, we pray, in Christ’s name and in His name, send us to serve others. Send your Spirit to stir our minds and hearts so that we may be compassionate toward our sisters and brothers who suffer. Grant that we may seek to minister to them and to their physical and spiritual needs. Above all, LORD, sow within us all that craving for You and your love so that we might be people of prayer daily because without that, we cannot be people of faith, hope and love. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen.
