LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Ecclesiastes 3:1-11

To everything there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.

A time to be born, and a time to die.

A time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted.

A time to kill, and a time to heal.

A time to break down, and a time to build up.

A time to weep, and a time to laugh.

A time to mourn, and a time to dance.

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together.

A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing.

A time to get, and a time to lose.

A time to keep, and a time to cast away.

A time to rend, and a time to sew.

A time to keep silent, and a time to speak.

A time to love, and a time to hate.

A time of war, and a time of peace.

What profit has the worker for his toil?

I have seen the task that God has given to the sons of men to be busied with.

He has made everything appropriate to its time; also, he has set the everlasting in their heart so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

Do I trust in the LORD? Do I trust in the LORD’s wisdom in all matters and love in all moments?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s first reading from Ecclesiastes reminds us of the those matters that are beyond human control yet not beyond Divine providence. We are also reminded that the LORD has woven within our being the desire for the everlasting which we come to realize is possible only from, through, and in the LORD.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Almighty and Eternal LORD, Source of all being, Love itself, we come to You this day aware of our limitations in this world, in this life. Send your Spirit to stir within us and rouse our minds and hearts to trust in You, your power and presence, manifestations of your love. Grant that we may seek to discern your will for us day to day and seek your help moment to moment. And as we strive to live the lives You created us to live, grant that when we leave this earth, we may enter your heavenly Kingdom. Amen.

CONTEMPLATIO – Sitting with the LORD in silence for a minute or more
