Daily Scripture Reflection & Prayer: September 3,2026

LECTIO - Read Scripture Text:   Luke 5:1-11

And it came to pass that as He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people crowded round Him to hear the word of God. He saw two boats moored by the lake, and the fishermen were washing their nets. He boarded one of the boats which was Simon’s, and He asked him to row out a bit from the shore. Then He sat down and taught the people from the boat.

When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Cast out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered Him saying, “Master, we have labored all night and caught nothing. But at your word, I will let down the net.” And when he did, a great multitude of fish were caught and their nets were near breaking. They called out to their partners who were in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats so that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell down at Jesus’ knees saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord,” because he was astonished as were all those with him at the size of the catch. And so were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Fear not, from now on, you shall be fishers of men.” And when the boats came to land, they left them and followed Him.

MEDITATIO - Meditate on text, allow the LORD to touch us with His Word:

LORD, when you come to me and tell me to act, do I listen, do I argue, to I obey?

BREAKING OPEN THE TEXT:

Today’s gospel recounts Jesus’ engagement of Simon Peter first in His mission to proclaim the Word and then to a call to a new way of life. Jesus asks Peter to put out into the deep – to leave the safety of shore. Only through trust in Jesus is the miracle of the multitude of fish possible.

ORATIO – Lifting our minds and hearts to the LORD in prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, You summon me to You, You call me to trust You and do as You ask. Send the Spirit to tenderize my being, to squash my pride and to sow in its stead humility and an openness to You and your loving desire for my salvation. Grant that I may learn to deny myself, pick up my cross and follow You for love of You. Amen.
